Well, that was a quick announcement. So now we know.

This will be the last Budget to take place in March of each year. From now on, Budgets will take place each Autumn – which means next year we shall actually be having two Budgets.

But after that – well, if things go smoothly, we would be having a Budget at the end of the year, the people who sit in the Houses of Parliament will be able to talk about it for a bit and hopefully pass it by March the following year, just in time for the start of the financial year in April. Which is as it should be.

I apologise by the way for not updating my own Autumn Statement page and being generally silent for a while. A few “family troubles” have cropped up when they shouldn’t have, so I have been otherwise occupied.

But I do wish to take this opportunity to thank all my readers for reading the articles on this site, and for your kind support over the years. I hope you and your family have a restful holiday, wherever you are.

The news is in the heading. The source is here at the GOV.UK site. Particularly gratifying to see that they haven’t waited a few days after it first appears on the BBC website.

Not that there’s anything particularly wrong with the latter, but those who practice law, and professional historians and journalists all know that primary sources are always better than secondary ones. Continue reading »

Can you believe it? We’ve just had an unnecessary Summer Budget (emergency my….) and now we’re told that we have a nice Autumn Statement to look forward to.

At least this time the announcement comes from an official source, the GOV.UK pages, rather than from the BBC, as was the case with the July Budget.

No doubt we will be hearing all sorts of predictions from the tax and non-tax pundits. Who knows, maybe they’ll finally get rid of entrepreneurs’ relief as was predicted last time…

Oh goody. That’s just what we need. I was dreading the prospect of an emergency Budget which has become a habit following the last few general elections. No sooner have we digested one Budget and got used to the new rules, we’re faced with another, just because a new government wants to put its stamp on the economy as soon as they’ve got into power.

But, the BBC has reported that George Osborne wants another piece of prime time TV, so that’s the way it must be.  (This is the official confirmation from the awful GOV.UK site, my thanks to Rebecca Cave for pointing it out to me on twitter).  Continue reading »

This is the announcement from the BBC’s website. I have yet to see this on the HMRC What’s New page or on the Announcements page on the GOV.UK site accessed from the HMRC site. No doubt it will turn up during the course of the day.

So we have three months of relative peace until all hell breaks loose!

UPDATE: The announcement is, however to be found on the GOV.UK site, but you have to access it through the HM Treasury pages.  Left hand and right hand don’t appear to have been introduced to each other as yet…
